Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU), Lincoln is seeking to appoint a dedicated individual to undertake the role of External Examiner for the following programme(s):

  • BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies
  • Early Childhood Studies combined degree programmes

The BGU Code of Practice for External Examining requires that applicants possess qualifications to the level of the programme(s) being examined or above or, where relevant, extensive practitioner experience. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have completed an MA in Early Childhood or a closely related discipline, and be involved with delivery of an equivalent or related programme at another provider.

Moreover, applicants must not have worked for Bishop Grosseteste University within the previous five years, nor possess more than one other current External Examiner appointment with another provider.

External Examiners at BGU are invited to comment on draft assessment briefs, audit samples of student work, attend examination boards and prepare an annual External Examiner Report at the close of each academic year. As such, applicants should possess sound expertise within the specified subject area and have experience of HE delivery.

Previous experience of External Examining and a good understanding of quality assurance processes is desirable but not essential, as is HEA Fellowship and / or completion of the AdvanceHE Professional Development Course for External Examiners.

The University seeks applicants able to take up the role from 1 September 2020, for a four year tenure to 31 August 2024. Please be advised that, owing to the current situation with Covid-19, it is likely that the induction process and initial duties for the role will be completed remotely in the first instance.

The position attracts an annual External Examiner fee of £450 plus reasonable expenses, including reimbursement of travel expenses to and from Lincoln, a historic city favoured by both students and visitors alike.

Further information regarding the above-detailed programme(s) is available via the Bishop Grosseteste University website, and a copy of the Code of Practice for External Examining is also available via the website, here.

Individuals interested in the role should forward an expression of interest and current academic CV to Fran Croydon, Academic Quality and Compliance Manager, via qualityoffice@bishopg.ac.uk, at their earliest convenience.

Applications will be reviewed as soon as a viable shortlist is attained, with a view to an appointment being made, in line with the University’s scrutiny process, as soon as possible thereafter.
